Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is a therapy that helps people heal from trauma and distressing memories. It was created by Francine Shapiro in the 1980s. EMDR uses guided eye movements or other forms of bilateral stimulation (like tapping or sounds) to help the brain reprocess painful memories. This can reduce the strong emotional reactions people have to those memories. EMDR is commonly used to treat PTSD, anxiety, and other trauma-related issues. By helping people reframe their experiences in a healthier way, EMDR can lead to better emotional balance and healing. The therapy follows a structured process that works on both the emotional and mental aspects of trauma.

Research and clinical practice suggest that EMDR is effective when delivered online, with several studies and therapist reports indicating that clients can experience similar benefits through remote sessions as they would in person. Online EMDR typically involves the same core principles as in-person therapy but delivered via video calls or apps that enable this stimulation.
